If you missed the recent visit of William Shakespeare to Waycross, don’t despair! You will have another opportunity to see our talented thespians at Waycross’s own “Shakespeare in the Park”.
Many attending one of the 4 recent performances of “Romeo and Juliet” at the Okefenokee Heritage Center May 3 – 6 expressed amazement at the quality of the performances, set and costumes. Actors ranged in age from 10 on up. There were no stops and starts and the delivery was flawless. While there were a few professionals in the cast, for most this was their first time on stage. “It gave me chills” and “I can’t believe how well they did with Shakespeare’s dialogue” were just a couple of the comments heard.
The atmosphere at OHC was also festive. Free seating was provided for “grasslings”* who brought blankets and folding chairs, and allowed for families to attend with all ages represented. BBQ, funnel cakes and fried oreos were available from concessions.
Director and Purlie Productions President Barbara Griffin noted: “This was an amazing experience for our youth. They found abilities in themselves they didn’t know they had, bonded as a group, and are eager to do it again!”
*When Shakespeare’s plays were performed in the early 17th century, free attendance was permitted for “groundlings” who could pay a penny sit on the floor in front of the stage.

With funding from Georgia Council of the Arts, the Okefenokee Heritage Center and Purlie Productions are proud to present the first annual Shakespeare in the Park. Romeo and Juliet will premiere May 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th at the Okefenokee Heritage Center.
“We are so proud to bring this world class performance and series of plays to our region,” Elizabeth Welch, Executive Director said.
A planning meeting for participants, parents, and the community will be held at the Okefenokee Heritage Center 1460 N. Augusta Ave in Waycross on January 18th at 5:30 pm.
Auditions will take place at the Heritage Center January 25th at 6:30 pm, January 26th at 6:30 pm, and January 27th at 10:00 am. For more information contact the Heritage Center at [email protected] or call 912.285.4260.
