The Okefenokee Heritage Center has been proud to host two summer camps featuring dramatic and visual arts. Both camps were sponsored by grants from Georgia Council of the Arts, the National Endowments for the Arts, and South Arts, Inc.
In June a dozen students came together to design sets, make costumes, do make up, and bring to life Alice in Wonderland. The show was very well attended and featured students in all of the key roles reciting poems and riddles from the original book by Lewis Carroll. Kasen Guinn starred as Alice and traversed through Wonderland meeting familiar characters including the Caterpillar, Mad Hatter, Red Queen, and more. Throughout July budding artists have studied and replicated styles from Ancient Egypt, Japanese Art, Renaissance, Baroque, Impressionism, and Surrealism. “I’m so excited to be part of art camp again!” Returning student Mattie Lee shouted. Students have been exposed to different mediums and styles expanding their artistic ability and studying methods from classical art.
The OHC also hosts private art lessons through their art guild members. Sign up your students today to help nurture these skills to help reinforce their stem initiatives through creativity and expression. Our own Angela Carstens teaches a wonderful art class and Crystal Murphy teaches music lessons. This is a great opportunity for your students to reinforce STEM initiatives through rhythm, math, and creativity! Crystal was born in North Ga mountains where she learned to play bluegrass fiddle. She is a graduate of the University of North Georgia with a degree in violin and music education. She has played with the Coastal Symphony for 5 years. She enjoys playing weddings and special events in the community.
